3. A random variable has the following probability distribution:

X        P(X)

10          0.19

15          0.38

20          0.34

30          0.06

45         0.03

Answer #1

3)

Solution :

Mean = = X * P(X)

= 10 * 0.19 + 15 * 0.38 + 20 * 0.34 + 30 * 0.06 + 45 * 0.03

= 17.55

variance =

= X 2 * P(X) - 2

=   102 * 0.19 + 152 * 0.38 + 202 * 0.34 + 302 * 0.06 + 452 * 0.03 - 17.552

=  47.2475

variance = 47.2475

Standard deviation = = 6.8737
