We want to compare the average weight of patients before and after a speciality diet is administered. We expect the weight to decrease after administration of the diet. Which of the following tests should be conducted to determine if the average weight for each patient is less at the conclusion of the test? A. paired t-test B. one- sample t-test C. t-test for two independent sample means D. z-test for comparing two population proportions

Answer #1

Solution:-) In the above question we want to compare the average weight of patients before and after a speciality diet is administered. So, obviously here we cannot use one- sample t-test, as there is comparison between two groups. So, there will be test between two samples, we need to check wheather the groups are dependent or independent. The sample selected from the first population is related to the corresponding sample from the second population. As we want to see wheather the average weight is decreased of the same patient. Hence, they are independent samples, So, we will use paired t-test. and z-test cannot be used as standard deviation is not known.

Hence, option (A) paired t- test will be correct.

Inference for comparing two means In a study for effect of diet and exercise on weight loss, we consider two randomly selected groups and the following table showing weight loss on average and its standard deviation. A study was conducted in order to compare the weight loss for two diet plans, Plan A and Plan B. Two hundred dieters were randomly selected. Of this sample 100 were placed on the Plan A diet and the remaining 100 were assigned to the Plan B diet. After the dieters were on the diet for 2 months the average weight loss and sample standard deviation of the weight losses were recorded. For the Plan A group there was an...

Researchers studied nausea among a sample of hospitalized patients. They used a t-test to compare average nausea scores in men and women. They report men had an average score of 1.02 and woman had an average score of 1.79. (p<0.001) Which statement is correct? Men had significantly less nausea Men had 79% less nausea but we can not determine if this is a significant relationship. A paired t-test was appropriate because the patients were all from the same hospital. There...

Suppose you are interested in deciding if a particular diet is effective in changing people's weight. You decide to run a "within subject" experiment. You select 6 people and weigh each of them. Two weeks and you weigh them again. For each person you compute how much weight they lose over this period. You find : Non-diet (subject 1-6): 0,8,3,2,-10,-1. You then put them on the diet and weigh them again after two weeks and compute how much they lose...

4. A reading center claims that students will perform better on a standardized reading test after going through the reading course offered by their center. A random sample of 12 students is given the standardized reading test. The same standardized reading test is administered to the students after participating in the reading course. (7) A new drug is developed to treat headache, and we want to compare its performance with an existing drug. The performance measure here is the time from taking the drug to people start to feel better. A random sample of volunteers were collected, in one occasion of headache, these people use one of the drug, and then in another occasion of headache (there is a long time between occasions), these volunteers use the other drug. Assuming all variables are...
