Scenario 2: A school psychologist wants to test the effectiveness of a new computer method for teaching reading to first graders. She recruits 400 first grade students in her school district and randomly divides them into two groups. Group 1 is taught by means of the new computer method, while Group 2 is taught via the traditional method. The same teacher is assigned to teach both groups. At the end of the year, an achievement test is administered and the results of the two groups are compared.

In a randomized experimental design, objects or individuals are randomly assigned (by chance) to an experimental group.

Using randomization is the most reliable method of creating homogeneous treatment groups, without involving any potential biases or judgments.
