The principal at Riverside High School would like to estimate the mean length of time each day that it takes all the buses to arrive and unload the
students. How large a sample is needed if the principal would like to assert with 95% confidence that the sample mean is off by, at most, 7 minutes. Assume σ = 14 minutes. Round to the nearest whole number.

Answer #1

Solution :

Given that,

Population standard deviation = = 14

Margin of error = E = 7

At 95% confidence level the z is ,

= 1 - 95% = 1 - 0.95 = 0.05

/ 2 = 0.05 / 2 = 0.025

Z/2 = Z0.025 = 1.96

sample size = n = (Z/2* / E) 2

n = (1.96 * 14/ 7)2

n = 15.36

n = 16

Sample size = 16

7. A high school principal is interested in the amount of time her students spend per week working at an after school job. 37 students are randomly selected and their working hours are recorded. The sample had a mean of 12.3 hours and a standard deviation of 11.2 hours. Managers at an automobile manufacturing plant would like to estimate the mean completion time of an assembly line operation, μ. The managers plan to choose a random sample of completion times and estimate μ via the sample. Assuming that the standard deviation of the population of completion times is 10.1 minutes, what is the minimum sample size needed for the managers to be 95% confident that their estimate is within 1.7 minutes of μ? A researcher would like to determine the average score on achievement tests among high school seniors attending Boulder High. A sample of n=100 students is selected and each student takes the test. The average score of the sample is 44 with an estimated standard deviation of 12 (this was estimated from the sample). Test the null hypothesis that the population mean of Boulder High students is actually 40. Note that the t-critical value for this degree of freedom is +/-...
