When analyzing the last digits of telephone numbers in Sandtown, it was found that among 1500 randomly selected phone numbers, 225 had zero as the last digit. If the digits are selected randomly, the proportion of zeroes should be 0.1 because from probability, 0 is one of the 10 possible digits.

  1. Use the p-value method with a 0.01 level of significance to test the claim that the proportion of zeroes is not equal to 0.1.
  2. Use the sample data to construct a 99% confidence interval to estimate the proportion of zeroes. What does the    confidence interval suggest about the claim that the proportion of zeroes is 0.1?
  3. Compare the results from the hypothesis test and confidence interval. Do they lead to the same conclusion? Why or why not?

You may use TI-84 calculator, or any software you prefer to do these calculations but be sure to include the printout

Answer #1

Let assume the actual the proportion of zeroes be .

we need to check whether  the proportion of zeroes is not equal to 0.1.

So here the hypothesis are

.

Here the test statistic is

so the p-value of the test is

So at level of significance 0.1 we reject null hypothesis as p-value<0.1.So there is enough evidence to conclude the proportion of zeroes is not equal to 0.1.

For calculating the exact 99% confidence interval we use MINITAB software.

and get the confidence interval as (0.127065, 0.175194).

Clearly in 0.1 does not belong to this interval so our conclusion is correct.

A random digit dialing telephone survey of 880 drivers asked, "Recalling the last ten traffic lights you drove through, how many of them were red when you entered the intersections?" Of the 880 respondents, 168 admitted that at least one light had been red. 1. A city official claims that the proportion of all commuters who are in favor of an expanded public transportation system is 50%. A newspaper conducts a survey to determine whether this proportion is different from 50%. Out of 225 randomly chosen commuters, the survey finds that 90 of them reply yes when asked if they support an expanded public transportation system. Test the official’s claim at α = 0.05. 2. Have you ever wondered what it means to click the “offset carbon emissions” button when you book a flight or train trip? It adds a small cost to your ticket, but how does this reduce emissions? The money is typically used to fund projects that reduce carbon emissions. One such project type is the introduction of more efficient cooking stoves into communities. Much of the world uses inefficient charcoal or wood stoves that result in excessive indoor air pollution, deforestation,...

This worksheet is about doing simulations on a TI-83/84, but feel free to do the work on a computer if you prefer. You are going to estimate the value of ? through a simulation. A circle inscribed in a 1x1 square has area ?/4 (you may want to draw a picture to convince yourself of this). Now, we can simulate picking points inside the square as follows: randomly select a value between 0 and 1 to be the x-coordinate, and...
