You are watching a horse race and if you can correctly select the horses that finish first, second, third, and fourth, you can win money (sometimes a lot). How many different bets are possible if there is a field of 17 horses?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We have a field of 17 horses and we can bet for horses on the first, second, third and fourth positions.

No. of horses which we can bet on for the first place = 17

No. of horses which we can bet on for the second place = 17-1 = 16 [Since, 1 horse has already been bet on for the first place]

No. of horses which we can bet on for the third place = 17-2 = 15 [Since, 2 horses have already been bet on for the first and second places]

No. of horses which we can bet on for the fourth place = 17-3 = 14 [Since, 3 horses have already been bet on for the first, second and third places]

Thus, the total number of different bets possible = 17*16*15*14 = 57120 [ANSWER]

Suppose that you always bet the favorite “across the board”, which means that you win something if the favorite finishes in the money. What probability distribution describes the number of races that you bet until...
