We are studying One Sample tests of Hypothesis. My problem/"story" reads as: From the class surveys, a facilitator finds that 68 of 98 students who have taken a particular math course were born in AZ. The college is interested in determining if people who were born Outside of AZ need to be targeted for a marketing campaign. Analyze this information using the five step hypothesis testing process to test the claim that greater than 60% of ASU students were born in AZ.
i Write the hypothesis using the appropriate symbols.
ii. test the hypothesis at the "alpha"symbol? = .05 levle of significance. Show your test statistic and decision rule. Make a decision regarding the null hypothesisi
and interpret the results of the test by writing the conclusion in terms of the problem in clear sentences that someone not taking the course would undstand.
question from me: need help setting up steps1, 2 of the 5 step method, and which testing to use? Our instructor mentioned about "binomial" probability? I didnt'under
undstand why he said that. We have been using Megastat in Excel to solve some of these types of problems.
i Write the hypothesis using the appropriate symbols.
Ho:p=0.60
Ha:p>0.60
ii. test the hypothesis at the "alpha"symbol? = .05 levle of significance. Show your test statistic and decision rule. Make a decision regarding the null hypothesisi
alpha=0.05
hypothesis test for single proportion
calculate test statistic:
z=p^-p/sqrt(p*(1-p)/n
p^=x/n=68/98= 0.6938776
z=( 0.6938776-0.60)/sqrt(0.60*(1-0.60)/98)
z=1.8970
Get p value in excel as
left tail p value=1-(right tail)
=1-{=NORMSDIST(1.897)}
=1-0.971086031
p =0.028913969
p=0.02891
Compare p to alpha and take statistical decision:
p<0.05
Reject Ho.
Accept Ha
Conclusion:
there is sufficient statistical evidence at 5% level of significance to conclude that greater than 60% of ASU students were born in AZ.
