Research shows that young people (18-25 years) devout 10.3 hours a week to physical exercise on average. A measurement made for a random sample of 24 college students in the 18-25 age group came up with the mean value of 8.7 hours of exercise a week with the sample standard deviation of 2.3 hours. At a=0.1, is it correct to conclude that college students do about the same amount of exercise as young people on average?

a. State the hypotheses and identify the claim.

b. Find the test value.

c. Calculate the p-value.

d. Make the decision to reject or not reject the null hypothesis.

e. summarize the results.

Answer #1

a)

H0: = 10.3

Ha: 10.3

b)

Test value

t = - / S / sqrt(n)

= 8.7 - 10.3 / 2.3 / sqrt(24)

= -3.41

c)

From the T table,

at 23 df with test statistics -3.41, p-value = 0.0024

d)

Since p-value < 0.10 level, we have sufficient evidence to reject H0 .

e)

We conclude at 0.1 level that we fail to support the claim that college students do about the same amount

of exercise as young people on average.

A biological psychologist wants to know if physical exercise changes reaction speed in elderly people.   A total of 18 older volunteer participants were found. Reaction speed was tested on the computer after six weeks of treatment. Reaction speed was measured in milliseconds. Data shown below. Why do you...
