A published report indicated that 90.5% of Canadians are mobile communication subscribers. A researcher surveyed 150 Canadians and found that 130 were subscribers. At α = 0.05, test the accuracy of the claim.

Answer #1

H0: p = 0.905

Ha: p 0.905

Sample proportion = 130 / 150 = 0.8667

Test statistics

z = - p / sqrt( p ( 1 - p) / n)

= 0.8667 - 0.905 / sqrt( 0.905 * 0.095 / 150)

= -1.60

This is test statistics value.

p-value = 2 * P( Z < z)

= 2 * P( Z < -1.60)

= 2 * 0.0548

= 0.1096

Since p-value > 0.05 significance level, we do not have sufficient evidence to reject H0.

We conclude at 0.05 level that we fail to support the claim.

4) 25 randomly selected people were surveyed and it was found that the average amount they charged was 1200 in a year with a standard deviation of 600. Given α = 0.025, test the claim that the mean amount charged by all people with credit cards is greater than 1300. Confirm your results using the p–value method as well as the critical t value. 5) 5) In a study 800 people out of 1000 people surveyed indicated that they supported...

Suppose a local newspaper published a highly inflammatory editorial claiming that illegal aliens are ‘taking our jobs’ and stated that there are ‘a lot’ more illegals in jobs in the Wisconsin agricultural sector than 10 years ago. You want to test this claim. Ten years ago, a survey found that out of 150 agricultural workers in the state, 24 of them were undocumented (illegal). A recent survey of 200 Wisconsin agricultural workers found that 36 were illegals. Does this evidence...
