There is a list of 110 songs that are given to me by a potential friend. She says that I should mark each song with whether I love it or not. Of these 110 songs, I mark 45 as "Love". Step 2 of 2: For the event discussed in the previous step, would it be unusual? Explain your reasoning.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Assumption: You are equally like to mark a song as 'love' and 'don't love'

That is, P(love), p = 0.5

Number of songs, n = 110

Mean number of songs you expect to love = np

= 110 x 0.5

= 55

Standard deviation of number of songs you love =

=

= 5.244

A value is considered usual if it is within 2 standard deviations of mean

Usual number of songs you love = 55 5.244

= 44.5 to 65.5

45 lies in the interval that is considered usual. Therefore, the event would not be considered unusual.

During the Great Depression total production in the US stayed below potential output for many years, and the unemployment rate reached 25% in 1933. Many economists argue that the WWII allowed the US to pursue one of its biggest government spending programs in history (as a result, the US government budget deficit was greater than 20% during the war. Currently the government deficit is about 2.5% of GDP). Moreover, the government debt became more than 110% of GDP in late...
