A researcher in the field of educational psychology is interested in the effects an open classroom has on intellectual development. In the open classroom things are much less structured than in a traditional classroom and she believes that this might affect problem-solving skills. An elementary school in her district switched to an open classroom format last year, and she is interested to see how this has impacted on the kids problem-solving skills.

She obtains a random sample of 49 fourth grade children and administers a conceptual problem-solving test to them. It is known that fourth graders in traditional classes have an average score of 82 on the test. The children in this study score an average of 86 with a standard deviation of 5.

Which type of statistical test should the researcher do?

A. independent two sample t-test

B. one sample t-test

C. matched pairs t-test

D. one sample Z-test

Homework Answers

Answer #1

B. one sample t-test

The one sample t-test is a statistical procedure used to determine whether a sample of observations could have been generated by a process with a specific mean. Suppose you are interested in determining whether an assembly line produces laptop computers that weigh five pounds. To test this hypothesis, you could collect a sample of laptop computers from the assembly line, measure their weights, and compare the sample with a value of five using a one-sample t-test.

An indeppndent researcher is interested in studying the factors that affects the educational attainment of an individual (Y). For her study she chooses educational attainment of the individual's mother (X,) and the annual income of the individual's family (X) as regressors. The researcher randomly selects a sample of 280 individuals and estimates the following regression function: ŷ = 8.00 + 1.74X, + 1.12X2. A researcher is interested in studying the effect of playing video-games on reaction time. Specifically, he thinks that playing a videogame will change reaction times, but he doesn’t know if it will make subjects faster or slower. He collects the following reaction times (in milliseconds) from a sample of 10 subjects before and after playing a video game for one hour. Before Playing a Video Game (T1) After Playing a Video Game (T2) Difference Score (D) = T1-T2 360 374...

7. Choose the appropriate statistical measure for each proposed study. A researcher and sports enthusiast is interested in knowing if the salaries of professional baseball players are significantly higher or lower than the salaries of professional basketball players. She samples 100 professional baseball players and 100 professional basketball players in order to compare their salaries. Which statistical procedure would you apply to determine whether there was a significant difference between baseball and basketball players in terms of their salaries? A...

A researcher is interested in the effects of alcohol consumption on an individuals’ ability to maintain their balance. She decides to test college students by having five groups drink five different amounts of alcohol and test them to see how many times they fall during a balancing task. In the first group subjects do not drink any alcohol, the second group drinks one 3 oz. glass of 100 proof alcohol in one half hour, the third group drinks two 3...

In a cognitive psychology experiment, the researcher is interested in whether encoding condition has an effect on memory for a list of words. She recruits 16 subjects to participate in the experiment. Each subject comes to the lab twice to be tested in two different encoding conditions and their memory performance scores are listed below. The researcher would like to leave the hypothesis non-directional without predicting which encoding condition would lead to better memory, and she sets the significance level...

There are many ways to measure the reading ability of children. Research designed to improve reading performance is dependent on good measures of the outcomes. One frequently-used test is the DRP, or Degree of Reading Power. It is known that the distribution of DRP scores is normally distributed. A researcher suspects that the mean score µ of all third-graders in Henrico County Schools is different from the national mean, which is 32. To test her suspicion, she administers the DRP...

In a July 2001 research note, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported the results of the National Occupant Protection Use Survey. One focus of the survey was to determine the level of cell phone use by drivers while they are driving a motor passenger vehicle. Data collected by observers at randomly selected intersection across the country revealed that in a sample of 1165 drivers, 35 were using their cell phone.
