A data set includes 103 body temperatures of healthy adult human for which the mean of their body temperatures was 98.5 degrees and their standard deviation was 0.61 degrees. Using the sample statistics, construct a 99% confidence interval estimate of the mean body temperature of all healthy humans.

Answer #1

Solution :

Given that,

Point estimate = sample mean = = 98.5

Population standard deviation = = 0.61

Sample size = n = 103

Z/2 = 2.576

Margin of error = E = Z/2* ( /n)

= 2.576 * (0.61 / 103)

= 0.15

At 99% confidence interval estimate of the population mean is,

- E < < + E

98.5 - 0.15 < < 98.5 + 0.15

98.35 < < 98.65

(98.35 , 98.65)
