Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution:

1) If a card is selected from a standard 52 card deck. What is the probability of selecting a club or diamond?

Ans : The equiprobable sample space S of drawing a card from well-shuffled pack of playing cards consists of 52 sample points. i.e n(s)=52

Number of club cards=13

Number of diamond cards=13

Number of club and diamond cards=n(A)=13+13=26

Therefore, the probability of selecting a club or diamond

P(A)=n(A)/n(s)

=26/52

=1/2

2) If a card is selected from a standard 52 card deck. What is the probability of selecting a face card or an Ace?

Ans : Use this rule

P(A or B) = P(A)+P(B)

A= face card and B= Ace card

P(Face card or Ace card)= P(Face card)+P(Ace card)

= 12/52 + 4/52

=16/52

=4/13
