What type of data is used to determine the gas mileage from 30 different types of cars?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The data that would be used to determine the gas mileage from 30 different types of cars would be continous data. For example, the car mileage could be 2.97 miles per gallon i.e. it can take any number unlike the discrete data which can take only particular number of values for ex: - 3, 4, 23 etc. Examples of discrete data could be number of trees which can be 3, 4, 20 or infinity but cannot be 3.65.

Continous data on the other hand can take on values like 3.66, 6.98, 12.85 etc. Continous data can take on any data over a continous range.

Suppose that a device advertised to increase a car’s gas mileage really does not increase gas mileage in reality. We test it on a small fleet of cars (with ?0: does not increase gas mileage and ??: increases gas mileage), and our data results in a p-value of 0.08. Assuming we use ? = 0.10 to make our conclusion, did we make a type I error, type II error, or a correct decision?

One gallon of gas is put into each of 30 test cars. The resulting gas-mileage values of the sample are computed with mean of 28.5 gallons per mile, and standard deviation of 1.2 miles per gallon. What is the 95% confidence interval estimate of the mean mileage?

In a recent publication, it was reported that the average highway gas mileage of tested models of a new car was 33.2 mpg and approximately normally distributed. A consumer group conducts its own tests on a simple random sample of 17 cars of this model and finds that the mean gas mileage for their vehicles is 31.5 mpg with a standard deviation of 3.5 mpg. Perform a test at the level to determine if these data support the contention that...
