The trans- Alaska pipeline system carries crude oil from Prudhoe Bay on Alaska’s slope to the port of Valdez on the south coast of Alaska. The pipeline carries a mixture of different qualities of oil. The quality of oil is measured in API Gravity degrees. The higher the API, the higher the price per barrel the shippers at Valdez must pay. The table below shows the relationship between quality and price per barrel of oil.
