Here the independent/explanatory variable is smoking while the dependent variable is low birth weight. Potential data sources that could provide with measurement of the dependent and explanatory variables are as follows:

  • Hospital & pharmacy records : Most extensive and obvious data source are hospitals which generally keep a very detailed record of smoking/non smoking of pregnant woman and also the weight of the baby at birth
  • National Center for Health Statistics, a division of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): All vital statistics are maintained by this branch of the US government and can provide relevant data for both the dependent and independent variables.
