Question

Do brain growth patterns indicate autism in toddlerhood, before a diagnosis of autism can be made?...

Do brain growth patterns indicate autism in toddlerhood, before a diagnosis of autism can be made? One study looked at the brain sizes of 30 autistic boys who had received an MRI scan as toddlers. Their whole-brain volumes in ml were recorded, and summary statistics are displayed below. It is known that toddlers without autism have an average brain volume of 1179 ml, and researchers wanted to know whether autistic toddlers’ brain volumes were different, on average.

n=30 mean=1298 standard deviation=88.412 standard error=16.142

Calculate the test statistic for this hypothesis test and specify the probability model for the test statistic.

a) z = 7.372, standard normal distribution

b) t = 7.372, t-distribution with df=29

c) t = 2.113, t-distribution with df=29

d) z = 40.379, standard normal distribution

e) t = 40.379, t-distribution with df=29

Answer #1

We have for given sample,
Population mean for given sample=1179
Sample mean=1298
Sample standard deviation s=88.412
Sample size =n=30

Degree of freedom = n-1 =29

t test statistic formula is

b) t = 7.372, t-distribution with df=29

To investigate if autism is marked by different brain growth patterns in early life, studies have tried to link brain size in infants and toddlers to autism. Suppose the whole-brain volume in non-autistic toddlers is known to be 1200 milliliters, on average. One study based on a sample size of 25 autistic toddlers had a sample mean volume of 1280 ml with a standard deviation of 230 ml. a.Calculate a 95% confidence interval for the whole-brain volume of autistic toddlers....

Autism may be marked by different patterns of brain growth during early life. Researchers measured brain volume (in milliliters, using an MRI) in 27 boys who were later diagnosed with autism. Brain volume is also available for 15 boys who did not develop autism; these 15 boys serve as the control group. The sample statistics are presented for both groups in the table below. Assume that the population variances are equal. Use a significance level of 0.05 to test for...

Children with autism have larger brains than children without the disorder, and the growth appears to occur before age 2, according to a new study released Monday. Previous imaging research found differences in the brains of children with autism and those without. It’s not clear if autism causes the brain changes or if the changes cause autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication. A 2005 study by researchers at the University of North Carolina at...

Total blood volume (in ml) per body weight (in kg) is important in medical research. For healthy adults, the red blood cell volume mean is about μ = 28 ml/kg.† Red blood cell volume that is too low or too high can indicate a medical problem. Suppose that Roger has had seven blood tests, and the red blood cell volumes were as follows. 33 26 40 33 32 39 29 The sample mean is x ≈ 33.1 ml/kg. Let x...

Question 21 Suppose a health insurance company is interested in carrying out an investigation as to the annual expenditures per household on their healthcare costs. In order to most accurately report their figures, the company decides to ensure “virtual certainty” about their estimates by using a Z value of 3.0 for their calculations. The company conducts a SRS of 843 households and determines the sample average household expenditures on healthcare is $43,257.00. A) Assume the company uses a σ=$879.00. Calculate...
