Variable Mean StDev Median
Number of Children 3.71 10.55 2.00

(The value of 69 was added to this chart)

What value was affected most by the outlier (69)? Explain

What value was the least affect? Explain

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Median will be least affected as we know that the median is dependent only on the middle value of the data set, not on the other values.

From the above data, it is clear median is unchanged and remain 2 (before and after outlier)

Mean is changed from 2.075 to 3.71 as we know that the mean is average value of all the data values. So, some affect can be seen on the mean value

Standard deviation is changed from 1.439 to 10.55. So, it is clear that the standard deviation is affected the most because the standard deviation is the measure of difference between the data values. In case of an outlier, the difference between data values is increased drastically, which increases the standard deviation.

Therefore, median is least affected and standard deviation is most affected
