Answer #1

freshman 200 150

Sophomores 50 40

Juniors 100 85

Seniors 150 125

a) What is the probability of randomly selecting a student and finding that he/she is a freshman or is carrying debt?

n(freshman or is carrying debt)= 200+40+85+125 = 450

P(freshman or is carrying debt) = 450/500 = 0.9

b) What is the probability that a randomly selected student is a sophomore or a junior?

n(sophomore or a junior) = 50+100

P(sophomore or a junior) = 150/500 = 0.3

c) What is the probability of randomly selecting a student who is not carrying debt or is a senior?

n(not carrying debt or is a senior)=(200-150)+(50-40)+(100-45)+150 = 50+10+55+150=265

p(not carrying debt or is a senior)=265/500 = 0.53
