A small pilot study is run to compare a new drug for chronic pain to one that is currently available. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either the new drug or the currently available drug and to report improvement in pain on a 5-point ordinal scale: 1 = Pain is much worse, 2 = Pain is slightly worse, 3 = No change, 4 = Pain improved slightly, 5 = Pain much improved. A Mann-Whitney U test was performed to assess whether there is a significant difference in self-reported improvement in pain, and the U test statistic=9. Should the null hypothesis be rejected or not? (enter 1 for “yes”, and 0 for “no”)

New Drug:                  4          5          3          3          4          2

Standard Drug:           2          3          4          1          2          3

. A new chemotherapy drug is released to treat leukemia and researchers suspect that the drug may have fewer side effects than the most commonly used drug to treat leukemia. The two drugs have equivalent efficacy. In order to determine if a larger study should be conducted to look into the prevalence of side effects for the two drugs, set up a Mann-Whitney U test at the alpha equals .05 level and interpret its results. Number of Reported Side-Effects Old...

A drug company is investigating a new pain relief medicine for migraine. To test the effectiveness of the new drug, 10 volunteers were selected and randomly assigned to receive either the new medication or a placebo. The subjects were instructed to take the drug or placebo during their next migraine headache episode and to report their pain on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being most pain). The following table summarize the results: Placebo Group Treatment Group 9 4...

A researcher wants to evaluate the pain relief effectiveness of a new medication for chronic pain sufferers. Using a pain scale from 0 to 10 (where 0 = no pain at all, and 10 = the most pain you can imagine), she compares the pain level for a sample of n1 = 4 people who received the new medication, with the pain level for a sample of n2 = 4 people who received a placebo. The data are as follows:...

10. A small pilot study is conducted to investigate the effect of a nutritional supplement on total body weight. Six participants agree to take the nutritional supplement. To assess its effect on body weight, weights are measured before starting the supplementation and then after 6 weeks. The data are shown below. Is there a significant increase in body weight following supplementation? Run the test at a 5% level of significance. Demonstrate the five steps for hypothesis testing and explain your...

1. ) Suppose a researcher is interested in the effectiveness of a new drug that is intended to naturally increase hours of sleep for elderly patients experiencing insomnia above 5 hours. Suppose he collects information from a group of 64 patients, and calculates a sample mean of 6.4 hours of sleep and a standard deviation of s=0.8.   Write out your null and alternative hypotheses. Researchers are studying stress and want to know if a new drug reduces feelings of chronic stress. They take a sample of 12 chronically stressed individuals and randomly assign them into one of three groups. The control group does not get the drug, the first experimental group gets one dose of the drug, and the second experimental group gets two doses of the drug. Then they record the number of symptoms of stress that the participants display. What can they...

A physical therapist developed a new yoga regimen specifically for treating back pain. She collected a random sample of chronic back pain patients from the hospital that underwent the new regimen for 35 days. For each day of the study, the patients are asked to rate their back pain on a scale from 0-10; no pain to extreme pain, respectively. Chronic back pain sufferers typically report a 8 on the pain scale. Below are the average back pain scores for...

(7) A new drug is developed to treat headache, and we want to compare its performance with an existing drug. The performance measure here is the time from taking the drug to people start to feel better. A random sample of volunteers were collected, in one occasion of headache, these people use one of the drug, and then in another occasion of headache (there is a long time between occasions), these volunteers use the other drug. Assuming all variables are...
