In this lab, you will perform a glucose tolerance test with all of the students in the class who agree to participate. You will use the data from the experiment to examine two different research questions. We will provide you with the objective for each research question and then ask you to answer a set of pre-lab questions for each of the experimental objectives.

Experimental Objective 1: Examine the trend in the dependent measures throughout the entire 90-minute testing period measured at 30-minute intervals.

a. What is the independent variable?

-Blood glucose levels

-glucagon release

-insulin release

-time

-urine glucose levels

-75 g glucose solution

b. What is(are) the dependent variable(s)? Choose ANY that apply.

-blood glucose levels

-glucagon release

-insulin release

-time

-urine glucose levels

-75 g glucose solution

c. What is the most apparopriate research question for experimental objective #1?

-Are blood and urine glucose levels different at 90-minute post-ingestion as compared to pre-ingestion in a fasting state in college students?

-Compared to a fasted state, how does drinking a 75 g glucose solution change blood and urine glucose levels over time (90 minutes) in college students?

-Is there a difference in blood and urine glucose levels measured over time in college students?

-What is the effect of drinking a 75 g glucose solution on blood and urine glucose in college students?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In glucose tolerance test, we first measure the fasted glucose level in blood then we take 75 g of glucose solution to test how much time it takes to clear the glucose solution.

(A) independent variable is time because we are checking the glucose level for every 30 minutes, so time is independent variable, so option D is correct

(B) Dependent variable are blood and urine glucose levels as their levels are changing over the time, so option A and E are correct

(C) option B is most appropriate answer as we are testing the 75 g glucose solution effect on the urine and blood glucose levels in the given time period.

As you saw from the lab PowerPoint slides last week, you will be doing a research study looking at ‘Aggression Priming” for your first paper. For this week’s discussion, I want you to discuss with your group what you think this study is about. What is the hypothesis? What theory does it come from? What do you predict will happen (do you expect something different than the hypothesis in the researcher instructions? If so, what and why?)? Do you think...
