A savvy group of graduate students are developing a new corporation, GraduateSchoolOrBust. Their mission is to promote success in graduate students’ academic outcomes. In developing their initial study, they seek to measure success as graduate or not graduate from school. They will plan to examine the effects of confidence (as measured by the tool Rate Your Confidence Scale), GRE score, and test scores from Biostatistics. They will follow one large group of graduate students from admission to graduation.

Identify the study design, the independent and dependent variable(s), covariate (if appropriate), and appropriate statistical test for data analysis.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The study design is observational study design.

The independent variables are confidence, GRE test score, and test scores from Biostatistics.

A possible covariate is confidence.

The appropriate statistical method as per the objective of the students is logistic regression using which they can make a predictive model to check whether the student graduated or not.

Note: We do not generally call logistic regression a statistical test but testing is a part of it. There is no statistical testing procedure which can be used in the given situation, maybe your professor is considering it a test as other people do.

Good luck with your studies!!!

A researcher was interested in how students’ Graduate Record Examinations scores (GREQ- Quantitative and GREV-Verbal) predict college students’ graduate school Grade Point Average (GGPA). He collects data from 30 college students. The GRE Quantitative (X1) and GRE Verbal (X2) scores can range from 400-1600 (Note. This is the old GRE score scale). GGPA (Y) can range from 0.00 to 4.00. f. What proportion of variance in graduate grade point average cannot be accounted by the variability in the quantitative GRE...

The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) conducted an extensive and representative survey of first-year students in MBA programs. This study reported that the mean age of first-year MBA students was 27 years. A random sample of 45 first-year MBA students at a particular Eastern school had a mean age of 27.6 years and a standard deviation of 1.5 years. Is this sufficient evidence, at the 0.01 level, that the mean age of all first-year MBA students at this school is...

Some groups in society are subject to stereotypes. Even if a person in a particular group does not personally believe in a stereotype about a group they belong to, they might still be worried about whether other people are judging them based on the stereotype. Psychologists have studied the effects of stereotypes on academic (and other kinds) of performance. Many researchers have found that people in a stereotyped group tend to do worse on a task where they experience a...

A coach at a high school wants to examine if reduced practice for athletes caused higher grades. She puts all of the athletes with low grades into the experimental group and reduces their practice time from 2 hours to 1 hour. She puts all of the high-achieving athletes in the control group and keeps their...

Please note that for all problems in this course, the standard cut-off (alpha) for a test of significance will be .05, and you always report the exact power unless SPSS output states p=.000 (you’d report p<.001). Also, remember when hand-calculating, always use TWO decimal places so that deductions in grading won’t be due to rounding differences. Problem Set 1: (22 pts) A teacher wanted to see if a new pedagogical approach was beneficial to students, and if the effects vary...
