chapter 7 section 3 exercise 33

Find the expected count and the contribution to the chi-square statistic for the (Treatment, Neutral) cell in the two-way table below.

Control: strongly agree 38, agree 47, neutral 4, disagree 16, strongly disagree 10

Treatment: SA 64, A 41, N 9, D 6, SD 2

Round your answer for the excepted count to one decimal place, and your answer for the contribution to the chi-square statistic to three decimal places.

expected count equals?

Contribution to the chi square statistic equals?

Answer #1

Answer :

given data :-

we have a data in the two way table

now we form the total of the table form

Observed (Oi) Strongly agree Agree Natural Disagree Strongly disagree TOTAL
Control 38 47 4 16 10 115
Treatment 64 41 9 6 2 122
TOTAL 102 89 13 22 12 237

=> Now we need to find out the expected count equals...?

we know that,

the expected count = (row total*column total)/grand total

= (115 * 12)/237

= 1380/237

= 5.8

The expected count equals : 5.8

Now we need to find out the Contribution to the chi square statistic

we know that,

chi square contribution = (observed -expected)2/expected

= (10-5.8)*2/5.8 ( data observed = 10)

= (4.2)2/5.8

= 8.4/5.8

= 1.448

the Contribution to the chi square statistic = 1.448
