Calculating the mean and standard deviation for two classes the results were as follows. For class one the mean is 17.1 and the SD is 9.814. For class 2 the mean is 20.6 and the SD is 8.64. What do these results tell us?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We are given

For class 1 , X1 bar = 17.1 , s1 = 9.814

For class 2 , X2 bar = 20.6 , S2 = 8.64

The coefficient of variation for class 1 =( S1/x1bar)*100

Coefficient of variation class 1 =( 9.814/17.1)*100 = 57.39 %

Coefficient of variation for class 2 = (S2/X2bar) *100

=(8.64/20.6)*100

Coefficient of variation class 2 = 41.94%

Coefficient of variation is less then data is consistent.

Here class 2 has low coefficient of variation than class 1 .

So class 2 is consistent than class 1

Create a hypothetical example of 2 classes of 8 students’ scores out of 100, such that 1 class has a higher SD and the other has a higher IQR. (Hint: IQR will not be effected by either the lowest or highest score but SD greatly will) Basically come up with two examples in which one class has a higher standard deviation and the other has a higher Interquile range.
