Are Jeopardy viewers nerds? A poll of 1200 Jeopardy viewers in
the U.S. was conducted to compare the expected to the observed
number of audiences in five categories of educational
backgrounds:
(1) those with less than high school education,
(2) high school degrees,
(3) 2-year degrees,
(4) 4-year degrees, and
(5) those with masters degrees or higher.
A goodness of fit statistical study was conducted. At the 5%
significance level, the critical chi-squared value is known to be
20.5. The chi-squared value computed from the data collected is
34.7.
At the 5% significance level, test the hypothesis that
observed and the expected distributions of education level of the
audience are consistent.
(1) Is this statistical test two-tailed, left-tailed, or
right-tailed?
(2) State the conclusion of the statistical study and the
reason for your conclusion (based on the chi-squared values).
