What are the disadvantages of simply using histograms to study process capability?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The disadvantage of simply using histogram to study process capability is that in case the process is out of control, the histogram by itself fails to distinguish two different processes and thus the histogram is misleading in its ability to graphically depict the process distribution. Thus, if the process is out of control, then by definition a single distribution cannot be fit to the data. Therefore, we always use a Control Chart to determine Statistical Control before attempting to fit a distribution for the data by histogram.
