You are planning a day of shopping. You need to visit 6 stores. If the order of the stores is randomly selected, what is the probability that Kinkos and the bank will be visited consecutively (in either order)?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Consider the case in which Kinkos and the bank will be visited consecutively. Treat the visit to Kinkos and bank as a single visit. Then, number of ways to visit 5 stores = 5!

Number of ways in which Kinkos and bank can be visited = 2!

Number of ways to visit Kinkos and bank consecutively in 6 visits = 5! x 2!

= 120 x 2

= 240

Total number of ways in which 6 stores can be visited = 6!

= 720

P(Kinkos and the bank will be visited consecutively) = 240/720

= 1/3

= 0.3333
