analyze meaningful versus meaningless variables reported in descriptive statistics

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The variables reported in Descriptive Statistics can be categorized into meaningful variables and meaningless variables as follows:

In order to consider a variable as meaningful, we should ask ourselves, " Can this be affected mathematically?". If it can be mathematically affected, it is categorized as meaningful variable.

For example, consider the data consisting of heights of all students in a class. Since height being a numerical value can be affected mathematically. So, height is a meaningful variable.

We cannot average gender, as it is a qualitative variable. So, gender is a meaningless variable.

Which of the following statements best describes the process that characterizes inferential statistics? Descriptive methods are used to characterize the information in a population so that conclusions may be reached regarding samples taken from that population. Descriptive methods are used to obtain parameters that are then used to make inferences about the sample. Descriptive methods are used to obtain statistics that are then used to make inferences about the population. Finite populations are aggregated to obtain (nearly) infinite populations that...
