A researcher believes that alcohol intoxication at even half of the legal limit, that is, .05 blood alcohol instead of .10, might severely impair driving ability. To test this, he subjects 10 volunteers to a driving simulation test first while sober and then after drinking sufficient alcohol to raise the blood alcohol level to .05. The researcher measures performance as the number of simulated obstacles with which the driver collides. Thus, the higher the number, the poorer the driving. The obtained results are as follows:

Before Drinking After Drinking
1 4
2 2
0 1
0 2
2 5
1 3
4 3
0 2
1 4
2 3

Test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in driving ability before and after alcohol consumption to the .05 blood alcohol level (use the .05 significance level). Provide the t-ratio, degrees of freedom, and the decision about the null in your answer.

A researcher is interested in the effects of alcohol consumption on an individuals’ ability to maintain their balance. She decides to test college students by having five groups drink five different amounts of alcohol and test them to see how many times they fall during a balancing task. In the first group subjects do not drink any alcohol, the second group drinks one 3 oz. glass of 100 proof alcohol in one half hour, the third group drinks two 3...

A medical researcher wants to examine the relationship of the blood pressure of patients before and after a procedure. She takes a sample of 27 people and measures their blood pressure before undergoing the procedure. Afterwards, she takes the same sample of people and measures their blood pressure again. The researcher wants to test if the blood pressure measurements after the procedure are less than the blood pressure measurements before the procedure and, thus, the hypotheses are as follows: Null...

To test the effect of alcohol in increasing the reaction time to respond to a given stimulus, the reaction times of seven people were measured. After consuming 89 mL of 40% alcohol, the reaction time for each of the seven people was measured again. Do the following data indicate that the mean reaction time after consuming alcohol was greater than the mean reaction time before consuming alcohol? a medical researcher believes that a drug changes the body's temperature. Seven test subjects are randomly selected and the body temperature of each is measured. The subjects are then given the drug, and after 30 minutes, the body temperature of each is measured again. The results are listed in the table below. Is there enough evidence to conclude that the drug changes the body's temperature? Let d=(body temperature after taking drug)−(body temperature before taking drug). Use a significance level of...
