Recent crime statistics collected over the past year reveal the following figures: 79% of all people arrested were male, 13% of all people arrested were under the age of 18; 7% of all people arrested were female and under the age of 18.

Let ?M repesent the event that the person arrested is male, and ?18U18 represent the event that the person arrested is under the age of 18.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

solution:

Given that

All people arrested were male = 79%

All people arrested were female = 1-79%=21%

All people arrested were under 18 = 13%

All people arrested were female and under 18 = 7%

All people arrested were male and under 18 =1- 7%=5%

18+ male= 79%-5%=74%

18+ female=21%-7%=14%

Therefore

the probability of arrested person is male and under 18 =

=79% of all males + 7% female under 18 = 86% or 0.86

the probability of arrested person is male and under 18 but not both (only female) =

=74% of 18+ males + 7% female under 18 = 81% or 0.81
