For the following examples, identify the independent variable, dependent variable, the sample, the population, the data, and the statistic.

A health social worker is interested in identifying whether fear motivation is effective in reducing the incidence of smoking. Forty adult smokers are selected from individuals residing in the city in which the social worker works. 20 are asked to smoke a cigarette after watching a gruesome film about the link between smoking and cancer. Vivid pictures of the diseased lungs and other internal organs of deceased smokers are shown in an effort to instill fear of smoking. The other group receives the same treatment, except that they are shown a neutral film unrelated to smoking. For 2 months after showing the film, the experimenter keeps records on the number of cigarettes smoked daily by the participants. A mean for each group is then computed, of the number of cigarettes smoked daily since viewing the film, and these means are compared to determine whether the fear-inducing film had an effect on smoking.

Answer #1

a) Independent variable is the type of videos

b) Dependent variables is the amount smoked after watching the video.

c) Sample is Forty adult individuals from city which is further divided into two groups each contain 20 adults.

d) Population is from a city in which the social worker works.

e) Data contains 40 adults individuals which is divided into two groups

First group who is watching gruesome film about the link between smoking and cancer.

Second group who is watching a neutral film unrelated to smoking

f) Since we are going to compare the two means the hypothesis are

H0:

Ha: (Left tailed test)

the test statistic under null hypothesis is

t= xbar-ybar/Sp*sqrt(1/n1+1/n2)

where xbar is mean of the first group

and ybar is mean of the second group.

Sp is pooled standard deviation.
