You believe that curling rocks made of Canadian Shield granite are “livelier” (that is, they will bounce farther) than the official World Curling Federation curling rocks made from the granite of the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig. Set up the null and alternative hypotheses that you would use to test your belief.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Let us assume that μ1 and μ2 are the mean height upto which the rocks bounce further.. μ1 be for the Canadian Shield granite and μ2 be for the  official World Curling Federation curling rocks made from the granite of the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig.

Null Hypothesis:

H0: μ1 - μ2 > 0

Alternate Hypothesis

Ha: μ1 - μ2 < 0

If the P value that will be obtained after performing the test will be more than 0.05, then null hypothesis will be accepted, i.e. curling rocks made of Canadian Shield granite will bounce further than the  official World Curling Federation curling rocks made from the granite of the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig. On the other hand, if the p value is less than 0.05, then the alternate hypothesis will be accepted.

The main moto of the researcher is to get a P value more than 0.05 in order to win his claim.

A suggestion is made that the proportion of people who have food allergies and/or sensitivities is 0.66. You believe that the proportion is actually less than 0.66. The hypotheses for this test are Null Hypothesis: p ≥ 0.66, Alternative Hypothesis: p < 0.66. If you select a random sample of 20 people and 13 have a food allergy and/or sensitivity, what is your test statistic and p-value?
