The Falcon Academic Success Test (FAST) is a test for determining the likelihood of graduating from UTPB. The FAST scores for students who took the FAST tests are approximately Normal with mean 600 and standard deviation of 300. What proportion of students who to the test this year had a FAST score of 800 or lower?
Hint: apply the NORM.DIST function in Excel to answer the question.
Define
X: Scores of FAST test
Given that X ~ Normal(mu,sigma2)
Where mu=600
Sigma=300
Here we are to find the probability that X is less than or equal to 800
Hence the proportion of students who to the test this year had a FAST score of 800 or lower ,i.e. the probability that X is less than or equal to 800, is 0.75 .
Using Excel
choose any box in excel and then assign equal to sign (=) in the box.
then type normdist.
choose NORMDIST from the drop down menu.
write 800 in place of x
write 600 in place of mean
write 300 in place of standard_dev
write TRUE in place of cumulative
and close the first bracket. press enter.
the value will be shown.
