  1. A powder diet is tested on 49 people, and a liquid diet is tested on 36 different people. The population standard deviations are two pounds and three pounds, respectively. Of interest is whether the liquid diet yields a higher mean weight loss than the powder diet. What formula would you use to solve this problem? State the null and alternative hypotheses.

Answer #1

Let 1 be mean of powder diet and 2 be the mean of liquid diet.

The null and alternative hypothesis are

H0: 1 >= 2

Ha : 1 < 2

We use formula for test statistics as

T = (1 - 2) / (Sp * sqrt (1/n1 + 1/ n2))

For the test of significance questions, clearly indicate each of the formal steps in the test of significance. Step 1: State the null and alternative hypothesis. Step 2: Calculate the test statistic. Step 3: Find the p-value. Step 4: State your conclusion. (Do not just say “Reject H0” or “Do not reject H0”, state the conclusion in the context of the problem.) Granola Crunch cereal is packaged in 1 pound boxes. Susan Torres, a quality control analyst who works for the manufacturer of the cereal, wants to check if the packaging process is working improperly: boxes are being over-filled or under-filled. A sample of 40 cereal boxes of Granola Crunch yields a mean weight of 1.02 pounds of cereal per box. Assume that the weight is normally distributed with a population standard deviation of 0.04 pound. 1. .We are interested in the average dollar amount lost by victims by burglary. The National Insurance Association has reported that the mean dollar amount lost by victims of burglary is $2,222. Assume that this is the population mean. We believe that the true population mean loss is different from this. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, overweight people on low-carbohydrate and Mediterranean diets lost more weight and got greater cardiovascular benefits than people on a conventional low-fat diet (The Boston Globe, July 17, 2008). A nutritionist wishes to verify these results and documents the weight loss (in pounds) of 30 dieters on the low-carbohydrate and Mediterranean diets and 30 dieters on the low-fat diet.
