What would be a good and proper procedure to test if a new vaccination works for patients? (I'm guessing something along the lines of clinical trials, five steps in hypothesis testing, chi squared test. not too sure)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The paired t-test should be used in order to test if a new vaccine works for patients or not.

For this first of all we set Null hypothesis as

H0: mu d =0 i.e. ( that vaccine have no effect on patients)

H1: mu d ≠0 ( vaccine has effect on patients)

Where, mu d is the difference in mean before and after vaccination.

Under H0 , test statistic

t= d bar/√(s^2/n) follows t statistic with (n-1) df

If calculated t is greater than t(alpha) for n-1 df then we reject h0 and concluded that vaccine work and if calculated t is less than t(alpha) for (n-1) df then we do not reject h0 and concluded that vaccine does not work.
