Problem Set 2: Chi Square Test for Independence

Research Scenario: A psychology student at a university is curious whether students in different majors (IV) have different class time preferences (DV), or whether class time preference is independent of major. After doing some preliminary research, she chooses three different majors and recruits 10 volunteers from each major. She then asks them to choose their preferred class time—either morning or afternoon. The results are listed in the table below.

Using this table, enter the data into a new SPSS data file and run a Chi Square Test for Independence to test whether class time preference is independent of major. Use the weighted cases method. Create a clustered bar chart to show the relationship between the variables.

Problem Set 5.4: Alternative to Chi-Square as a Test of Independence Criterion: Identify an alternative to chi-square as a test of independence. Data: A chi-square test of independence could be used to examine the relationship between overhead light preference (on or off) and glasses use (wearing or not wearing). Instruction: Answer this: What other type of test could be used to measure this data? Explain. (hint: the answer is NOT fishers exact test)

Problem Set 1: (10 pts) Research Scenario: As part of their study on the relation between rejection and depression in adolescents (Nolan, Flynn, & Garber, 2003), researchers collected data on externalizing behaviors (e.g., acting out in negative ways, such as causing fights), anxiety, gender, and age. Some of the data are presented below (you would need a larger sample size but this is for practice only). Select and conduct the most appropriate statistical test to determine whether there is a...

Problem Set 2: Linear Regression Analysis Research Scenario: A social psychologist is interested in whether the number of days spent in a refugee camp predicts trauma levels in recently resettled refugees. He interviews 17 refugees to determine how many days they spent in a refugee camp before being resettled, then administers the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire Part IV (HTQ Part 4), where a higher score indicates higher levels of trauma (Mollica et al., 1992). He compiles the information in the table...

Problem Set 2: Pearson’s correlation (7 pts) Research Scenario: Is there a positive relationship between grit and GPA in high school seniors? A researcher examined this issue by having students beginning their senior year of high school complete a grit inventory using a Likert-based scale (range 1 – 7), where higher numbers indicate more “grit”. GPA was self-reported (scale 0 – 4.0). Enter the data shown here into SPSS to assess whether there is a positive relationship between grit and...

Chapter 18 Chi-square – Test of Independence Certain editors at Sage like to think they’re a bit of a whiz at soccer. To see how well they play compared with Sussex lecturers and postgraduates, we invited various employees of Sage to join in our soccer matches. Every player was allowed only to play in one match. Over many matches, we counted the number of players that scored goals. After running a chi-square test of independence, determine whether or not the...

Research Scenario: A developmental psychologist wants to study the effect of instructional type on learning of the alphabet. She randomly selects a sample of 20 students at the local preschool and assigns them to two groups, a “Testing Effect” group who takes daily tests of recall on the alphabet (n=10) and a “Meaningful to Self” group who comes up with things they like that start with each letter of the alphabet and discuss them in groups (n=10). After one week...

You will perform a Chi-Square test and an ANOVA test. For each hypothesis test make sure to report the following steps: Identify the null hypothesis, Ho, and the alternative hypothesis, Ha. Determine whether the hypothesis test is left-tailed, right-tailed, or two-tailed. Find the critical value(s) and identify the rejection region(s). Find the appropriate standardized test statistic. If convenient, use technology. Decide whether to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis. Interpret the decision in the context of the original...
