Question: A habituation task is often used to test the memory for infants. In the habituation procedure, a stimulus is shown to an infant for a brief period, and the researcher records how much time the infant spends looking at the stimulus. This same procedure is repeated three times. If an infant begins to lose interest in the stimulus (i.e., decrease in the time looking at the stimulus), the researcher concludes that the infant “remembers” the earlier presentations and is demonstrating habituation to an old familiar stimulus.
