How can/should a drug researcher conduct a study with good methods to determine an effective treatment for the coronavirus?
The drug researcher can conduct a placebo control study. In the current study, two identically large groups are taken and one group is given the drug and the other is given a placebo treatment that is designed not to have any real impact. Both the groups are monitored over the period of time and the number of improvements in both the groups are noted down. Towards the end of the study, both the groups are checked at a statistical level if the group with drug injection had an improvement. If the group had an improvement, the drug is expected to be performing well. Else, one might have to retest the drug with modifications to the drug.
