Decide whether each random variable is discrete or continuous.
(a) Number of ants in an anthill
(b) Height of a UNCC statistics student
(c) Distance between stoplights on a road
(d) Baby's age in months
A variable is continuous if it can only take some specific values in an interval. Counts are usually discrete. A variable is continuous if there are infinite values possible within any given interval.
(a) Number of ants in an anthill - Discrete (Number of ants cannot be values such as 7.5, 100.11 etc..)
(b) Height of a UNCC statistics student - Continuous
(c) Distance between stoplights on a road - Continuous
(d) Baby's age in months - Discrete (Age or time is actually continuous variable, but here we are writing the age in months. When written in unit of months, it is discrete because we are rounding off to the nearest month and writing)
