An anonymous survey asked 100 children if they liked the color blue or red better. 70% of the children said they liked red and 30% said they liked blue. But a research in all children in the whole state of Delaware revealed that 30% liked red. what is the reason for this disparity?
This occurs due to simpson paradox. Simpson paradox is a phenomena in which a trend might appear in one or many groups(or partition) of data, but is not visible or reverses when the groups are joined together.
In this case, different groups are possibly different states, and in one state (delaware), children like blue (70%) more compared to red. But when all states are grouped together and a random sample of 100 children are selected irrespective of the state(joined together), then this result reverses and we observe more children who like red colour.
