  1. A well has a water column depth of 10 feet and diameter of 6 in. (a) What is the well volume in gallons; (b) How much water need to be purged before samples can be collected.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) depth of well water = 10 feet = 10×12 = 120 inches

diameter of well d = 6 inches r = d/2 = 6/2 = 3 inches

volume of well = r2 h = 32 120 = 3392.92 cubic inches.

There are 231 cubic inches in a gallon so this is

3392.92/231 = 14.687 gallons

b) hence 14.687 gallons water need to be purged before samples can be calculated.
