If the relationship between x and y is given by y=0.3x+0.8, what is the correlation coefficient between x and y?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Correlation coefficient measures the strength of linear association between the two variables. It lies between - 1 and 1; the extreme values being attained when the two variables are exactly linearly related. It takes value - 1 if slope is negative and 1 if slope is positive

Here y = 0.3x + 0.8

So the variables x and y are exactly linearly related. Also slope = 0.3, which is positive.

So the value of correlation coefficient between x and y is 1.

The correlation between x, ( the diameter of the tree), and Y (the tree’s height) is 0.875064.   A coefficient of correlation of 0.875064 indicates a strong correlation between the independent variable and the dependent variable.   In general, if Y tends to increase along with X, there's a positive relationship.
