A total of 30 tomato plants were grown in a greenhouse under various conditions consisting of combinations of soil type (I, II, III, IV, and V), and fertilizer type (A,B,C). There were an equal number of plants grown under each combination. After a fixed period of time, the yield (in kilograms) of tomatoes from each plant was measured.

-What type of experimental data is this?

-What is the number of treatments?

-What is the number of replications?

-What is the experimental unit?

-What is the measurement unit?

-What is the total number of measurements?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Type of experiments - Two way ANOVA with replications

Note : As there are two factors soil and fertilizer its two way ANOVA

Number of treatments = 5*3 = 15

Note : There are two factors : Soil and fertilizer. Further soil is split into 5 levels and fertilizer is split into 3 levels . Thus there are 5*3 =15 treatments .

Number of replications - 2

Note: As there are 15 treatment combinations and 30 observations , therefore each combination is repeated twice

Soil 1 Soil 2 Soil 3 Soil r4 Soil 5
Fertilizer A two observation per cell
Fertilizer B
Fertilizer C

Experimental unit -  tomato plants

Measurement unit - yields in kilograms of tomatoes from each plant

Total number of measurements - 30

The toxicity of two sludge fertilizer treatments are compared. One hundred tomato plants were randomly assigned to pots containing sludge processed by either the “new” or “old” treatment. The tomatoes harvested from the plants were evaluated to determine if the nickel was at a toxic level. Let πNew be the true population proportion of all plants treated with the “New” treatment that will be toxic and let πOld be the true population proportion of all plants treated with the “Old”...

Part I. Indicate whether true or false (T or F). ____ Storm water detention ponds typically are designed to regulate the outflow peak rate at or below a single target value, such as the pre-development (pre-land use change) peak runoff rate for a specified return period event. Detention storage alters the peak but not the volume of the outflow hydrograph. _____ Typical rating curves for weirs are concave upward.
