Determine the test used for the following problem: Does the standard deviation in the weight loss of dieters who follow the low-carb diet differ from the standard deviation of the dieters who follow the low-fat diet?

Answer #1

Yes.....

we aimed to estimate the long-term (6 or more months) effect of low-carbohydrate diets compared with those of low-fat diets on body weight, waist circumference, and metabolic risk factors, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, ratio of total to HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, and serum insulin. In addition, we explored the possible underlying reasons (i.e., study duration, diabetic status, age, gender, and levels of carbohydrate intake in diets) for the observed heterogeneity of effect sizes.

3. In a test of weight loss programs, 40 adults used the Atkins weight loss program. After 12 months, their mean weight loss was found to be 2.1 lb, with a standard deviation of 4.8 lb. Construct a 90% confidence interval estimate of the standard deviation of the weight loss for all such subjects. Does the confidence interval give us information about the effectiveness of the diet?

A weight-loss diet claims that it causes weight loss by eliminating carbohydrates (breads and starches) from the diet. To test this claim, researchers randomly assign overweight subjects to two groups. Both groups eat the same amount of calories, but one group eats almost no carbs, and the other group includes carbs in their meals. After 2 months, the researchers test the claim that the no-carb diet is better than the usual diet. They record the proportion of each group that...

A study was conducted in order to compare the weight loss for two diet plans, Plan A and Plan B. Two hundred dieters were randomly selected. Of this sample 100 were placed on the Plan A diet and the remaining 100 were assigned to the Plan B diet. After the dieters were on the diet for 2 months the average weight loss and sample standard deviation of the weight losses were recorded. For the Plan A group there was an...
