  1. One of your last homework problems related to a bivariate linear regression analysis on a sample of 107 nations. It used the percent of the adult population that was literate in a nation to predict life expectancy for people born now in that nation. In other words, the study investigated whether nations with higher rates of literacy have longer (or perhaps shorter) life expectancy. The value of R2 for the regression analysis was 0.749.

  1. Data on the same 107 nations was used to investigate the relationship between the percent of people in a nation who smoke and the life expectancy for people born now in that nation. The value of R2 for this second model is 0.810. To calculate the correlation between smoking rate and life expectancy, we would take the square root of R2. What sign (+ or -) you think the correlation between smoking rate and life expectancy has? Write a sentence to explain your answer. (6 points)

  1. Compare the values of R2 for the two regression analyses. Write a sentence or two to describe which factor explains more of the variance in life expectancy – rate of literacy or rate of smoking. (10 points)

Answer #1

ANSWER::

a)

Negative,

Because the rate of smoking increase the life expectancy decreases.

ie. one thing increase the another thing will decreases.

b)

The rate of smokeng explain the more variablity in life expectancy, beacuse the r square associated with rate of smoking explain more than the rate of literacy.

Here 81% variablity in life expectancy is explain by the variable rate of smoking whereas 74.9% variablity in life expectancy is explain by the variable rate of literacy.
