Q1. Why would you perform a one-way ANOVA over a t-test? Is the answer, when the population means of only two groups is to be compared, a t-test is used, but when means of more than two groups are to be compared, ANOVA is preferred (Y/N)

Q2. A rag-tag group of bandits crash the party to steal candy. In a frenzy, you carefully record the numbers of different candies that group grabbed. You arrange the data in a table, below:

  1. Enter this data into SPSS. Run a one-way ANOVA on this data. Be sure to choose an LSD post-hoc and descriptive statistics.
  1. P-value for Levene’s Test for Equality of Variances: 0.6422

  1. Based on Levene’s Test, does this data violate the assumption of a ANOVA? (Y / N) NO

  1. Is the overall effect significant? (Y / N) If so, write the p-value: Yes, it is significant because the p-value is 0.001, so it is less than 0.05.

  1. Report the p-value for the following multiple comparisons and write if each is significant:
    1. Snickers v. Twix: 0.644 was this significant? (Y / N) No
    2. Snickers v. Candy Corn: 0.001 was this significant? (Y / N)Yes
    3. Twix v. Candy Corn: 0.00 was this significant? (Y / N) Yes
  2. Which group has the greater mean score? Candy Corn

  1. Report the results below in 3 properly formatted sentences, exactly what we did in class (include group means and p values from the post-hoc test and interpretation).

Q 1.

The t-test is a method that determines wheather two populations are statistically different from each other, where as ANOVA determines wheather three or more populatios are statistically difference in means and the spread of the distribution (i e., Variance) across groups, how ever the ways that they determine the statistical significance are different.

Here, Answer is YES.

When the population means of only two groups is to be compared, a t-test is used, but when means of more than two groups are to be compared ANOVA preferred.

Suppose that the overall F-test obtained from performing a one-way ANOVA resulted in a p-value that was not statistically significant. Which of the following CANNOT be true? The variability within the groups is very large compared to between-group variability. The variability between the groups is very large compared to within-group variability. The ratio of the between and within variability was not sufficiently large. The F-statistic was not larger than the critical value obtained from the F-distribution.

The One-Way ANOVA applet lets you see how the F statistic and the P-value depend on the variability of the data within groups, the sample size, and the differences among the means.
