Review the criteria for a binomial in the announcements before selecting your problem.

Example

a) On this example we will examine the probability a couple who has 8 children and has exactly 5 boys.

b) Next we will look at the probability that they have more than 5 boys.

c) Finally we will look at the probability that they have at most 5 boys.

Assume a .5 chance of having a boy.

Solution can be solved using excel.

a) On this example we will examine the probability a couple who has 8 children has exactly 5 boys.

Type this in an excel cell

=binom.dist(5,8,.5,False)

and then hit enter

.21875 would be the answer

b) Next we will look at the probability that they have more than 5 boys.

Type this in an excel cell

=1-binom.dist(5,8,.5,True)

and then hit enter

.144531 would be the answer

c) Finally we will look at the probability that they have at most 5 boys.

Assume a .5 chance of having a boy.

Type this in an excel cell

=binom.dist(5,8,.5,True)

and hit enter

.855469 would be the answer

Open the Excel program In our last computer assignment we learned how to find the standard normal distribution up to the given score value a, that is we found P(Z < a). We used Excel instead of the standard normal distribution table and evaluated P(Z<-1.72) with the command =NORMDIST(1.72,B1,B2,TRUE) and we obtained 0.042716 approximately. Here Z is standard normal distribution. In this exercise we will learn how to go backwards, that is from the probability P(Z < a) to the...

What distribution best models each situation? (No actual work, just which distribution best models the problem) A. According to the Daily Racing Form, the probability is about 0.67 that the favorite in a horse race will finish in the money (first, second or third place). Suppose that you always bet the favorite “across the board”, which means that you win something if the favorite finishes in the money. What probability distribution describes the number of races that you bet until...

In this exercise we examine the effects of overbooking in the airline industry. Ontario Gateway Airlines' first class cabins have 10 seats in each plane. Ontario's overbooking policy is to sell up to 11 first class tickets, since cancellations and no-shows are always possible (and indeed are quite likely). For a given flight on Ontario Gateway, there were 11 first class tickets sold. Suppose that each of the 11 persons who purchased tickets has a 20% chance of not showing...
