  1. Based on information from the National Cyber Security Alliance, 93 % of computers owners believe that they have antivirus programs installed on their computers. In a random sample of 400 scanned computers, It is found that 380 of them actually have antivirus programs. Test the claim that 93% of computers have antivirus programs using the p-value approach.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given that, n = 400 and x = 380

=> sample proportion = 380/400 = 0.95

The null and alternative hypotheses are,

H0 : p = 0.93

Ha : p ≠ 0.93

This hypothesis test is a two-tailed test.

Test statistic is,

=> Test statistic = Z = 1.57

p-value = 2 * P(Z > 1.57)

=> p-value = 2 * [ 1 - P(Z < 1.57) ]

=> p-value = 2 * [ 1 - 0.9418 ]

=> p-value = 2 * 0.0582

=> p-value = 0.1164

Since, p-value is greater than 0.05 level of significance, we fail to reject the null hypothesis (H0).

Conclusion : There is not sufficient evidence to warrant rejection of the claim that 93% of computers have antivirus programs.

Rainy Weekends - Significance Test: During the summer of 2012 in Acadia National Park, the mean rainfall on weekends was greater than the mean on weekdays. In this problem we determine whether or not it rained significantly more on weekends. A significant difference is one that is unlikely to be a result of random variation. The table summarizes this data. The x 's are actually population means but we treat them like sample means. Necessary information: n x s2 s...

Based on past data, the producers of Ice Mountain bottled water knew that the proportion of people who preferred Ice Mountain to tap water was 0.71. To see how consumer perception of their product changed, they decided to conduct a survey. Of the 134 respondents, 97 indicated that they preferred Ice Mountain to the tap water in their homes. The 90% confidence interval for this proportion is ( 0.6604 , 0.7874 ). What is the best conclusion of those listed...

A.) Is the national crime rate really going down? Some sociologists say yes! They say that the reason for the decline in crime rates in the 1980s and 1990s is demographics. It seems that the population is aging, and older people commit fewer crimes. According to the FBI and the Justice Department, 70% of all arrests are of males aged 15 to 34 years. Suppose you are a sociologist in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and a random sample of police files...

Question 11 (1 point) A suggestion is made that the proportion of people who have food allergies and/or sensitivities is 0.48. You believe that the proportion is actually less than 0.48. The hypotheses for this test are Null Hypothesis: p ≥ 0.48, Alternative Hypothesis: p < 0.48. If you select a random sample of 28 people and 12 have a food allergy and/or sensitivity, what is your test statistic and p-value? Question 11 options: 1) Test Statistic: 0.545, P-Value: 0.293...

Based on the National Center of Health Statistics, the proportion of babies born at low birth weight (below 2,500 grams) in the United States is roughly .078, or 7.8% (based on all the births in the United States in the year 2002). A study was done in order to check whether pregnant women exposed regularly to second hand smoke increases the risk of low birth weight. In other words, the researchers wanted to check whether the proportion of babies born...

Suppose you work for Fender Guitar Company and you are responsible for testing the integrity of a new formulation of guitar strings. To perform your analysis, you randomly select 51 'high E' strings and put them into a machine that simulates string plucking thousands of times per minute. You record the number of plucks each string takes before failure and compile a dataset. You find that the average number of plucks is 6,398 with a standard deviation of 286.12. A...
