Difference between distribution and t distribution:

(1) A test tests a null hypothesis about the relationship between two variables. For example, we test the hypothesis that men and women are equally likely to vote Democratic, Republican or other.

A t test tests a null hypothesis about two means. For example, it tests the hypothesis that two means are equal.

(2)

There are variations of the test to deal with ordinal data, i.e., a data that has order, such as "none" " a little", "some", "a lot.

There are variations of the t test to cover paired data: for example right and left eyes.
