For the sample data: x 1 3 5 5 8 y 5 - 2 2 - 1 - 3 Draw the scatter plot. Based on the scatter plot, predict the sign of the linear correlation coefficient. Explain your answer. Compute the linear correlation coefficient and compare its sign to your answer to part (b).

Answer #1

From the scatterplot, we can see there is downward pattern in data.

So sign of linear correlation coefficient should be negative.

Value of linear correlation coefficient is found by using minitab as -0.715.

Hence, our predicted sign of correlation coefficient is same as the actual sign of correlation coefficient.
